Lee University is a Christian liberal arts university located in Cleveland, Tennessee. Lee University announced recently that its enrollment has risen by more than 80 students this fall, with an on-campus registration of 3,930. This is a two-percent increase over last year, and marks the 18th straight year of increased enrollment under the leadership of president, Dr. Paul Conn.
Lee now is the largest church-related institution in Tennessee, and the second largest private school, behind Vanderbilt University. Lee University is owned and operated by the Church of God which is headquartered in Cleveland, Tennessee.
Location
Lee's 120-acre campus is located in a residential neighborhood on the center of historic Ocoee street area near downtown Cleveland, only 30 minutes from the heart of Chattanooga, just 28 miles away; 124 miles from Atlanta; 172 miles from Birmingham; and 181 miles from Nashville.
Accreditation
Lee University is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award Bachelor's degrees and Master's degrees. Teacher Education programs are approved by the Tennessee State Department of Education for licensure. The School of Music is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music. Lee also holds membership in the American Council on Education, the Council of Independent Colleges, the Council of Christian Colleges and Universities and the Appalachian College Association |

Lee has been selected for many years to the US News and World Report and Princeton Review on college rankings as one of the top Southern Liberal Arts Colleges. Lee University is proud to have been chosen for inclusion by the John Templeton Foundation to the Honor Roll for Character Building Colleges.
Lee University officials have been ranked in the Top 20 Bachelor's Institutions in regards to the number of students studying abroad. With 322 students studying abroad, Lee ranked 17th out of the 20 bachelor's institutions. This Top 20 list appeared in the November 17th issue of The Chronicle of Higher Education and is a 1998-1999 study on the number of U.S. students studying abroad.
Lee University is widely known for its strong faculty and the outstanding traditions in Music, Bible, Education and Pre-Medical program success. Successful graduates in the School of Music include Mark Harris from 4 Him, Janna Potter Long and Melissa Greene who both sing with the Christian music group called Avalon. The festival choir at Lee was honored in the past by being included in the recording of a new CD, which features the "Best Choirs in America" The Festival Choir is made up of all six vocal music groups. Lee choirs have featured on inspirational channel and several have been featured on joint recordings with Alvin Slaughter, Ron Kenoly, and Bill Gaither.
The School of Religion is Lee's first-degree area and dates back to 1918 in preparing young men and women for ministry. The University was founded in 1918 to train ministers for the work of the church. That same purpose continues but in a much more comprehensive way. The majority of the top 100 churches in the Church of God are pastored by Lee graduates. There are more than 400 students preparing for full-time ministry in the Department of Bible and Christian Ministries.
The Helen DeVos School of Education is one of the largest degree programs on campus. Its success is best indicated by the success of its alumni in the teaching profession. In recent years, the two top education awards, Tennessee Teacher of the Year and the Principal of the Year, were both Lee graduates. The local area schools have a greater number of Lee graduates who are principals, teachers and coaches. Most graduates, especially Special Education majors, enjoy very high placement rates after graduation in school systems across the nation.
The Department of Natural Science and Mathematics has become very popular in preparing students for professional schools in medical related fields. Even in the highly competitive world of graduate studies in the medical fields, this department enjoys a very high acceptance rate of students to continue their medical training at institutions of their choice. A large part of this success is due to personal attention by the faculty that compliments the solid course content in these major fields of study.
There have been well over 100 graduates who have gotten their PhD's since the program began in the 1960's. Recent departmental focus in Environmental Science has lead to numerous research grants and field studies.
Lee academics programs offers 48 undergraduate majors, 14 graduate programs, and 4 degrees by independent home study. The rapid interest and expansion into graduate studies include programs in Church Music, Classroom Teaching, Counseling Psychology, Elementary or Secondary Education, Education Leadership, School Counseling, Biblical Studies, Special Education, Theological Studies, and Youth and Family Ministries.
Fast growing degrees on the campus include Communication, Youth Ministry, Business Administration, Computer Information Systems, Psychology and our Masters degree in Counseling Psychology. Lee also offers many other degree choices on both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
Student Profile
There are 761 full-time students in the current freshmen class. Lee freshmen average 22.7 on the ACT, compared to a Tennessee State average of 20, and a national average of 21. |
